February in Scotland: Youth Participation Booms, Local Players Medal in Thailand, and Communities Connect on the Court
February 2026 was a massive month for Pickleball Scotland! From international triumphs to skyrocketing grassroots participation, the sport is thriving across the nation. Here is your exclusive Scottish roundup for World Pickleball Magazine.
Grassroots Growth & Booming Participation
Pickleball is officially expanding nationwide, and recent data from Active Schools and Active Campus proves the demand is accelerating fast. Youth participation is exploding, with the first term of the 2025/26 academic year seeing 456 Active Schools sessions and an incredible 8,477 visits—surpassing the total visits for the entire previous year. The Active Campus initiative has been equally successful, engaging 2,225 participants across 259 sessions.

But it’s not just the youth picking up paddles; community outreach is flourishing for all ages. In Dumfries and Galloway, fitness student Bill Wilson launched a brilliant Active Campus project aimed at helping the over-50s stay active, successfully introducing 12 complete beginners to the sport in a single, laughter-filled session. Over in Edinburgh, the free “Pickleball for Wellbeing” initiative at Meadowbank Sports Centre continues to provide an accessible, supportive environment for individuals aged 75 and over to stay mobile and socialise over a post-game cuppa.
Scottish Players Shine Abroad
Scottish picklers are making waves globally! A dedicated group from the Bearsden and Milngavie Pickleball Club recently travelled to the Thai Open in Hua Hin to combine their love for the sport with a holiday. Competing with immense pride, the group returned home with an impressive haul of two gold, six silver, and two bronze medals.
League Action & Fierce Competition
Back on home soil, the Pickleball Scotland Leagues served up some fantastic, nail-biting matches. In Division 2 West, the Clyde team pulled off a thrilling 5-4 victory over David Lloyd Hamilton B, clinching the win with a tense 16-14 final game. Elsewhere, Porty Paddles secured a 6-3 victory over the EL Ninjas in East Division 2, while the Largs Vikings defeated the Lomond Lobbers 6-3.
Despite the fierce competition, sportsmanship and camaraderie remain at the heart of the Scottish leagues. When Strathgryffe’s “The Foxes” took on the Lomond Dinkers, they celebrated their hard-fought matches together with friendly banter and plenty of Tunnock’s tea cakes.
Tournaments & Charity Events
The upcoming tournament calendar is packed with meaningful events. On March 22nd, the East Lothian Pickleball Club will host The Dave Strang East of Scotland Open, a day of friendly competition honouring Dave’s memory while raising crucial funds for Chest Heart & Stroke Scotland. On March 29th, players will gather at the Allander Sports Centre for “Pickleball 4 Paws,” a 20-game rally scoring charity event supporting the animal rescue work of Cats Flaps.
Meanwhile, anticipation is building for the prestigious Pickleball Scotland Open 2026. Entrants are eagerly awaiting their confirmed spots, and players are already getting ready for the Championships Party on May 30th at The Village Hotel in Edinburgh, which promises to feature traditional Scottish ceilidh dancing and a buffet.
Developing the Workforce & Putting Safety First
Pickleball Scotland is heavily investing in the sport’s infrastructure and community leaders. In Aberdeenshire, Pat Campbell recently trained 35 new Local Ambassadors across Mintlaw Academy and Inverurie Community Campus. Similarly, Sheena McDonald led an inspiring ambassador course in South Lanarkshire, which was made possible by the incredible equipment fundraising efforts of East Kilbride’s Mike Duncan.
Safety also remains a top priority across the country. The Largs Pickleball Club recently completed a highly recommended, hands-on training session on CPR, defibrillator use, and choking recovery. At the national level, Pickleball Scotland is promoting a safe environment for all by offering a free online Child Wellbeing and Protection in Sport (CWPS) certification course for coaches and volunteers.
