Three Semi-Finals and Nowhere to Hide

All editions ·

Good morning, pickleballers.

Sahra Dennehy begins Saturday in Kuala Lumpur with three semi-finals ahead of her and another PPA Tour Asia triple crown within reach. The difficulty is not simply winning three matches. It is moving from singles to partnership with Danni-Elle Townsend, then facing Townsend from the other side of the net.

In Ho Chi Minh City, Trinh Linh Giang has ensured Vietnam will be represented in the D-Joy mixed doubles final. Today’s magazine selection then turns to Japan’s student movement, an academy betting on China and Lee Whitwell’s warning about what a professional commitment really means.

Three semi-finals and nowhere to hide for Sahra Dennehy

Dennehy came within one match of a triple crown in Beijing, winning women’s singles and doubles before Chao Yi Wang and Len Yang stopped her in the mixed final.

Three months later, Yang is her mixed doubles partner and the possibility is open again. Dennehy faces top seed Kaitlyn Christian in singles, plays women’s doubles with Townsend and then meets Townsend and Joey Wild in mixed.

Noe Khlif and Tama Shimabukuro also remain alive in two draws, while Shimabukuro’s singles semi-final against Hong Kit Wong repeats the Macao final decided by two 11-9 games.

Giang keeps the home challenge alive as two different routes reach the same final

Trinh Linh Giang and Domenika Turkovic recovered from losing the second game of their quarter-final against Harsh Mehta and Pei Chuan Kao, then beat Max Manthou and Shelby Bates 11-8, 11-3.

Bobbi Oshiro-Alconcel and Brandon Lane reached the final from the other half after surviving two extended matches before defeating defending champions Jack Munro and Roos van Reek 11-5, 12-10.

The doubles schedule now rearranges the same relationships. Giang partners Manthou, while mixed-final opponents Oshiro and Turkovic move onto the same side of the court in women’s doubles.

The students building university pickleball in Japan

Mayu Omori saw something on the public courts of Southern California that she believed Japanese university sport was missing: competition without rigidity, and a community in which newcomers could belong quickly.

What began as an attempt to create a place to play at Keio University has developed into a student-led network connecting campuses across eastern and western Japan.

Fabrizio Lavezzari’s September feature asks whether those university clubs can give Japanese pickleball something participation figures alone cannot provide: a lasting place inside youth culture.

An academy, a contract and two tests of commitment

Today’s other magazine selections look at commitment from opposite sides: the organisation investing in a new market, and the professional player accepting someone else’s investment.

The Academy Betting on China

The Asia Elite Pickleball Academy is betting on Hainan as a place where coaching, facilities and international expertise can help build a serious player pathway. The opportunity is large, but so is the work required to turn interest into a system.

The Player Package Isn’t a Suggestion

Lee Whitwell argues that when an overseas tournament pays for travel, accommodation and a player’s presence, it is buying a professional commitment. Accepting the package means accepting the clinics, media work and matches that come with it.
