Heat Check: the method

Version v2, published 26 October 2026. Ratings as of 31 August 2026; MLP results through end of 2026 season (all events in MLP's official feed).

Heat Check v2 is global. It blends PKLStats Rating v2 (2026 MLP form) with a WPM Results rating: our own Elo counted from every final pro singles and doubles match the PPA Tour, PPA Tour Asia and PPA Tour Australia published in the last 12 months. Then it adds small, capped signals: results form over the last 20 matches, MLP team form, Fantasy League form and Traders market movement.

The base does most of the work. Ten rating points is one standard deviation; recent results form can move a player 5 points and the other signals 12 at most. Regional lists (Europe, UK, Asia-Pacific, Latin America) are the same scores filtered by nationality where the PPA Tour lists one, otherwise by where the player competes.

The formula

Heat Check score = Base + Results form (cap ±5) + MLP form (cap ±5) + Fantasy (cap ±4) + Market (cap ±3). Base = average of PKLStats Rating v2 and the WPM Results rating when a player has both (so PKLStats Rating v2 carries half the weight it did in v1); otherwise whichever exists. The WPM Results rating is our own Elo (start 1500, K 24, doubles use the team average, best discipline with 8+ matches) over final open-level pro singles and doubles matches published since 1 January 2026 by the PPA Tour and its regional tours, the APP Tour, MLP, D-Joy, NPL and Pickleball England (PickleBook), mapped onto the PKLStats Rating v2 scale by a straight-line fit over players who have both, then capped at ±12 from the median eligible PKLStats Rating v2. Results form = (win % over the last 20 matches − 50) ÷ 10. MLP form = (2026 MLP team doubles win % − 50) ÷ 10. Fantasy = 8 × (percentile of last-3-gameweek Fantasy League points − 0.5). Market = 6 × (percentile of Traders quote change since open − 0.5). A missing signal counts 0. Eligible: High or Medium confidence (a PKLStats confidence, or 15+ counted matches since 1 January 2026; 40+ is High). Names that appear in two regions without a confirmed identity are left out.

Only High or Medium confidence players are eligible: a High or Medium PKLStats rating, or at least 15 counted matches since 1 January 2026 (40 or more is High). A player with less evidence is left out even if the number is high.

Live in v2

PKLStats Rating v2 with its band and confidence; 2026 MLP team results from the PKLStats public export; final open-level pro match scores published by the PPA Tour and its Europe, Asia, Australia and Canada tours, the APP Tour, MLP, D-Joy, NPL, Pickleball England (PickleBook), the Pickle Pro Tour (Spain) and RAQT public tournament pages (new.raqt.com: Rome Open, Riccione, Namur, Ulster Open, Uruguay APU circuit, PickleFest Lima), counted by WPM; nationality from the PPA Tour public player list; PB Fantasy League points and Traders quotes from their public pages, refreshed at each build.

Coming next

Pickleball England Nationals and the EPF European Open once played; WPC Series events if their match scores appear on a source we may crawl (today only on pickleball.global, whose robots.txt excludes us); APP Tour Asia if its robots.txt allows; a weekly panel of named voters (weight 0 until it launches).

Results counted (since 1 January 2026)

  • PPA Challenger: 6484 matches, 17 events
  • APP: 2392 matches, 11 events
  • Pickle Pro Tour: 1607 matches, 6 events
  • MLP: 1289 matches, 13 events
  • PPA Asia: 1139 matches, 9 events
  • PPA: 1098 matches, 5 events
  • RTA: 958 matches, 51 events
  • PPA Australia: 913 matches, 6 events
  • RAQT: 560 matches, 7 events
  • Pickleball England: 476 matches, 1 events
  • NPL: 415 matches, 1 events
Every event, with its source

WPM Results rating ≈ 0.0800 × Elo + -29.5, fitted on 101 players with both numbers, then capped at ±12 from the median eligible PKLStats rating. Elo inside a pool that rarely meets the pro tours (a national open, D-Joy) can run high; the cap limits that.

Regional lists

Europe: European players, the UK included, ordered mainly on results at European and UK events (Pickle Pro Tour, RTA Europe, Pickleball England, RAQT). Nationality is the country shown on the PPA Tour's public player list. UK: British players, ordered mainly on results at UK events. Nationality is the country shown on the PPA Tour's public player list. Asia: Players from Asia, ordered mainly on results at Asian events (PPA Asia, APP and D-Joy events in Vietnam, MLP Asia). Nationality is the country shown on the PPA Tour's public player list. Australia & NZ: Players from Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific, ordered mainly on results at events there (PPA Australia, NPL). Nationality is the country shown on the PPA Tour's public player list. Latin America: Players from Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean or South America, ordered mainly on results at events in the region. Nationality is the country shown on the PPA Tour's public player list. Nationality comes from the country code on the PPA Tour's public player list; without one we use the region where 60% or more of the player's matches were played. When two listed players share a name with different nationalities, we leave the nationality blank unless their matches can be told apart by tour (for example, the Australian Ben Johns at PPA Tour Australia events is counted separately from the American Ben Johns).

How a regional list is ordered: the base score uses a results rating computed only from matches at events in that region (Europe counts European and UK events), reaching full weight at 15 regional matches and blended below that with the global base, whose distance from the median counts at 50% because it is built mostly on US tour play. Last-20 form at regional events is added in full. Form at events elsewhere (mainly the US PPA and APP tours), MLP team form, fantasy and market each count at 25% of their global weight. To be listed, a player needs at least 5 matches at events in the region within the 12 months before the latest result in our data; players who only play in the US do not appear. Asia and Australia & NZ are separate lists: Asia-Pacific events are split by where they are played.

Event tiers: big regional events count more than small local ones. Each event's field strength is the average WPM results Elo of everyone who played in it (our own Elo from match scores, never a third-party rating). Events are split into thirds by field strength: tier 1 (top third) counts in full, tier 2 at 75% and tier 3 at 50%, both in the regional Elo and in regional last-20 form. The field-strength list is published in our data file (event-tiers.json). Europe · UK · Asia · Australia & NZ · Latin America

What this is not

It is not a forecast, a betting line or a price, and it does not republish anyone else's ranking, points or ratings. It uses no ranking or rating tables from APP, GPA, DUPR, PPA or anyone else: only publicly reported match scores, which WPM counts to build its own numbers. Nationality for regional lists comes from the PPA Tour's public player list; without one, a player is placed where 60% or more of their matches were played. Fantasy and Traders numbers come from the public pages of the PB Fantasy League and Traders games.

PKLStats Rating v2 (PKLStats' own model), published table for reference date 2026-08-31. Built from official MLP 2026 doubles game results (3,890 MLP games 2024-2026) with tour-based starting values from 12,184 public PickleWave tour matches (to 2026-05-03).

Ridge-regression pair model on official MLP doubles games; each game's point margin is shared among the four players on court, with a shared strength plus a small offset per discipline, recent games weighted more (120-day half-life), and starting values from public tour results. 80% bands from 200 resamples.

80% band: the range containing the rating in 80% of 200 resamples of the underlying games.
