Vietnam’s men take over the World Cup singles draw

All editions ·

Good morning, pickleballers.

The first major professional draw of the Pickleball World Cup has already told us something important about the host nation. Vietnam did not just put one man into the closing stages of singles. It put three into the final four.

Elsewhere, Sofia Sewing arrives at the PPA National Championships carrying a No. 46 seed which looks increasingly detached from her current level, while RTA2000 Split delivered one of Europe’s stronger weekends just as PPA Tour Europe begins to change the competitive landscape around it.

The Lead
Vietnam did not find one men’s singles contender. It found three.

Lý Hoàng Nam, Phúc Huỳnh and Quang Dương occupied three of the four men’s singles semi-final places at the Pickleball World Cup in Da Nang. Only Bulgaria’s Martin Stanchev prevented an entirely Vietnamese last four after beating Brandon Lane and Ronan Camron.

Huỳnh eventually stopped Stanchev, while Hoàng Nam advanced from the other semi-final after Quang Dương was forced to retire with a wrist injury. That leaves Hoàng Nam and Huỳnh to play for gold on Sunday.

Gordon Watson watched the draw unfold courtside for WPM and came away struck less by one result than by the depth behind it. Vietnam’s leading men arrived through different pathways, played different styles and kept appearing deep in the same international draw.

The women’s competition gives the result useful context. Katerina Stewart will face Roos Van Reek in Sunday’s final after Vietnam’s deepest women’s run ended in the quarter-finals. Same host nation. Same crowd. Very different competitive outcome.

Why Vietnam’s men have taken over the singles draw
PPA National Championships

Sofia Sewing is seeded 46th. That does not mean she is the 46th-best player in Cary.

Sewing has spent 2026 winning on the APP Tour and competing at Premier-level Major League Pickleball. Her PPA ranking cannot account for most of that because she has not spent the year accumulating PPA singles points.

The result is one of the strangest numbers in the National Championships draw. Sewing starts at No. 46 despite winning singles in Kuala Lumpur and Sacramento, while another global ranking model currently places her first in women’s singles.

Ben Johns provides the inverse example. Reduced singles participation has pushed him to No. 24, setting up an opening-round meeting with Tyson McGuffin which once belonged much deeper in major tournaments. Cary is exposing the difference between ranking position and present competitive strength.

Why Cary’s seeds do not tell the whole story
Europe

Split delivered for the RTA. The harder question begins now.

Domenika Turković won women’s singles and women’s doubles at RTA2000 Split, while Bálint Bakó recovered from losing the opening game of the men’s singles final to beat James Chaudry 9-11, 11-3, 11-4.

On the evidence of Split, predictions that the RTA is about to disappear look premature. The tournament assembled many of Europe’s recognisable players and produced results which carried weight beyond one Croatian weekend.

But PPA Tour Europe is now building a 20-event circuit and signing players from the same relatively small elite European pool. Split showed what the RTA can still put together. Vilnius, Farnham and the months ahead will show how often it can keep doing it.

What Split means for the RTA’s future
The Bigger Picture

Three stories, one warning: the surface is becoming less reliable.

A No. 46 seed does not automatically describe the 46th-strongest player. One internationally recognised Vietnamese star does not describe the depth now sitting behind him. A successful tournament does not automatically tell us how secure the circuit staging it will be six months from now.

Professional pickleball is adding players, tours and ranking systems faster than the old shorthand can keep up. Cary, Da Nang and Split are all asking essentially the same question in different ways: what does the evidence underneath the headline actually tell us?

World Pickleball Studio

Your tournament deserves more than a camera pointed at the court

World Pickleball Studio is our production and broadcast arm, built to help tournaments turn their existing match coverage into something that feels like a proper sporting broadcast.

Commentary, graphics, studio presentation, sponsor integration, post-match programming and content around the competition can all sit around the stream you already have. The aim is simple: make more of the tournament without asking organisers to rebuild their entire production operation.
