Today’s Briefing
Pain is information. The mistake is assuming it always means damage.

Pickleball players often respond to pain in one of two ways: ignore it and keep playing, or attack it as aggressively as possible. RAD Roller founder Michael Mallory argues that both approaches can miss what the body is actually trying to communicate.

That question of intelligent preparation runs through today’s other essential reads. Our Road to the English Open players are discovering that imperfect preparation does not have to become failed preparation, while DUPR and JOOLA are attempting to create consistency around one of pickleball’s most inconsistent pieces of equipment.

The Lead

Michael Mallory wants players to stop treating recovery as punishment

Harder pressure does not automatically produce better recovery. Mallory explains why the nervous system, the brain’s interpretation of threat and the body’s willingness to move all matter as much as the tool being pressed into a painful area.

The practical lesson for pickleball players is simple but important: recovery should help the body feel safe enough to move well again. It should not become another physical contest to win.

The players stopped chasing perfect preparation

Injuries, anxiety, unavailable partners, disrupted training plans and life away from the court have shaped the final weeks of preparation for our Road to the English Open players.

The breakthrough has not been finding a flawless solution. It has been accepting that readiness is not the same as perfection. With the tournament approaching, adaptability may now matter more than everything that did not go according to plan.

Equipment And Industry

DUPR and JOOLA are trying to make one ball feel familiar everywhere

The JOOLA HC-40 will become the official ball across DUPR’s global competition network. On the surface, it is an equipment partnership. Its wider importance lies in the attempt to create common playing conditions across countries, venues and events.

Pickleballs change with temperature, surfaces, manufacturing variation and repeated use. If DUPR can make one ball familiar across its network, it will be doing more than promoting a product. It will be helping to define what standardised global competition feels like.

The Bigger Picture

Better performance begins with reducing uncertainty

Mallory wants players to understand what their bodies are telling them rather than immediately fearing pain. Our English Open group is learning to trust the preparation it has managed rather than obsess over what was missed. DUPR and JOOLA want players to encounter the same ball wherever they compete. Each story reaches the same conclusion from a different direction: confidence grows when uncertainty becomes manageable.
