Cary’s Draw Breaks Open as Vietnam Take Aim at the World Cup

All editions ·

Good morning, pickleballers.

Friday has arrived with two tournaments reaching the point where the early evidence has to survive knockout pressure.

In Cary, Sofia Sewing and Keilly Ulery have blown open the women’s singles draw while the other divisions have compressed into a loaded quarter-final day. In Da Nang, Vietnam have turned a dominant World Cup pool stage into something more interesting: the chance to prove that a collection of outstanding individual performances can become the best national team in the tournament. And away from the brackets, the World Pickleball Podcast asks a very practical question about one of the sport’s least glamorous problems: what do you do when your grip gets wet?

The Lead
Cary’s outsiders broke the draw. Now they have to live in the space they created.

There is a difference between producing the result nobody expected and returning the following day when everybody is paying attention.

Sofia Sewing and Keilly Ulery did not sneak into the women’s singles quarter-finals. Sewing beat No. 8 seed Kiora Kunimoto 11-4, 11-2. Ulery removed No. 5 seed Lea Jansen 11-2, 11-4. Between them, two players seeded outside the top 25 outscored two top-eight seeds 44-12.

Now Sewing gets Kate Fahey and Ulery gets Brooke Buckner. That is the harder part. The first upset changes a bracket. Winning again begins to change how the player who produced it has to be regarded.

Men’s singles has already lost Ben Johns, leaving Christopher Haworth, Federico Staksrud, Christian Alshon, JW Johnson and the rest of the last eight staring at a tournament whose opportunity has widened without becoming easier. Mixed doubles may be even better: Johns and Anna Leigh Waters face Fahey and Staksrud, the Johnson siblings meet Parris Todd and Andrei Daescu, Anna Bright and Hayden Patriquin get Catherine Parenteau and Riley Newman, and Rachel Rohrabacher and Alshon face Tyra Black and Gabe Tardio.

The Round of 16 showed us who could break the draw. Today’s quarter-finals tell us who can live in the space they created.

Pickleball World Cup

Vietnam have looked like the team to beat. Now the World Cup changes completely.

Vietnam spent the individual programme filling podiums. Then they went through their Open team pool without losing a match, beating Chile, the Cayman Islands and Colombia 6-0.

Gordon Watson, watching from Da Nang, has seen enough. He places the hosts alongside the United States among the favourites because the team format should reward exactly what Vietnam have demonstrated all week: depth in more than one discipline and fewer obvious weak points for an opponent to attack.

The challengers are becoming interesting too. Australia showed the value of balance in a 4-2 pool win over Belgium. Watson keeps returning to South Korea, particularly the quality he has seen from their women. India have forced themselves into the conversation by winning 17 of 18 matches across three pool ties.

The individual events told us which players could win in Da Nang. The knockout stage asks something different: which countries can keep finding answers when the discipline, partnership and tactical problem change from one match to the next?

Why Sahara Dry thinks sweaty hands are a pickleball problem worth solving

Not every performance problem in pickleball requires a new paddle, a different training programme or another tactical adjustment. Sometimes the problem is considerably simpler: the player cannot keep hold of the grip.

On the latest World Pickleball Podcast, Sahara Dry founder Rob joins Chris Beaumont and Gordon Watson to explain why he built a dry-grip spray for racket and paddle sports, what moisture actually does to a player’s connection with the handle, and why pickleball became an obvious market for the product.

The conversation goes beyond a product pitch. It gets into the problem Sahara Dry is trying to solve, how the idea moved from frustration to formulation, what players are actually putting on their hands and grips, and what a small sports brand learns when it starts trying to establish itself inside a fast-growing game.

Our website piece gives you the doorway rather than the whole conversation. The fuller Sahara Dry story is being held for the September magazine. For now, this is one to listen to.

The Bigger Picture

Depth only matters once somebody starts looking for the weak point

Cary and Da Nang are running different competitions, but both have arrived at the same sporting question.

The early rounds establish who is capable of producing a level. Knockout play asks whether that level survives when opponents have evidence, preparation time and fewer places to hide. Sewing and Ulery now have seeded quarter-final opponents waiting for them. Vietnam’s national side has to turn a week of individual dominance and a perfect pool stage into a knockout run. By Sunday, both tournaments should have told us considerably more about which performances were moments and which belonged to something repeatable.

Your tournament deserves more than a camera pointed at the court

World Pickleball Studio is our production and broadcast arm, built to help tournaments turn their existing match coverage into something that feels like a proper sporting broadcast.

Commentary, graphics, studio presentation, sponsor integration, post-match programming and content around the competition can all sit around the stream you already have. The aim is simple: make more of the tournament without asking organisers to rebuild their entire production operation.
