It was a highly competitive weekend across the Asia-Pacific region, marked by significant tournaments concluding on both the PPA Tour Australia circuit and the World Pickleball Championship (WPC) Series. As the sport continues its rapid international expansion, the latest results from Sydney and the Asia Open highlighted a growing depth of talent emerging from the continent.

In Australia, the PPA125 Sydney event drew an impressive 451 competitors between March 12 and 15, providing a robust test for the region’s top professionals. The weekend ultimately belonged to Hong Kit Wong, who secured a brilliant double gold medal haul. Wong commanded the men’s pro singles, defeating Mitchell Hargreaves in the final to take the title, before partnering with Eunggwon Kim to claim the men’s pro doubles crown.

On the women’s side of the draw, Danni-Elle Townsend mirrored Wong’s success by also capturing two gold medals. Townsend partnered with Sahra Dennehy to win the women’s pro doubles, and subsequently teamed up with Joseph Wild to secure a hard-fought victory in the mixed pro doubles. Meanwhile, Andie Dikosavljevic demonstrated her formidable baseline game, taking the women’s pro singles gold ahead of Nicola Schoeman.

Simultaneously, the WPC Asia Pickleball Open wrapped up its five-day schedule on March 15, delivering a compelling showcase of 5.0-level competition. In the premier 19+ singles divisions, Lam Ying Suet captured the women’s gold medal after overcoming Mihika Yadav, whilst Jose Maria Pague defeated Sonu Kumar Vishwakarma to win the men’s title.

The senior categories also featured outstanding performances, with Pini Lee securing the women’s singles 50+ gold and I Gusti Ngurah Alit Putra Hariwibawa emerging victorious in the men’s singles 50+ division.

These dual events underline a vital trend for the sport. The increasing frequency of high-level, heavily populated tournaments across the APAC region proves that competitive pickleball is establishing a firm, independent foothold outside of North America. As these domestic circuits continue to strengthen, the pathway for Asian and Australian players to eventually challenge the established elite on the global stage becomes increasingly clear.
