How did Hunter Johnson beat Tama Shimabukuro?
Johnson, the third seed, took the first game 11-4 against the fourth seed in an all-American final. Shimabukuro levelled at 11-6, and Johnson won the decider 11-7.
He had already come from behind on Saturday: in his semi-final he lost the opening game 11-3 to second seed Federico Staksrud before winning 11-8, 11-5. Shimabukuro had beaten seventh seed Noe Khlif 11-8, 11-2 in the other semi-final, a rematch of the Leapmotor Kuala Lumpur Cup final in September.
For Shimabukuro, silver still completed a remarkable set. He won men’s singles gold at the Macao Open in May and at the Leapmotor Kuala Lumpur Cup, so he leaves the season with a gold dragon body and tail and a silver head, according to ThePickleBase.
Johnson’s week also ran through the mixed draw, where he partnered Ting Chieh Wei to the semi-finals before losing 11-0, 11-1 to Johns and Waters.
Waters wins two titles, one against her partner
Waters’ Sunday began with the first final of the day. She and Bright, the top seeds, beat the second seeds Tyra Hurricane Black and Jorja Johnson 11-6, 11-4, adding the Hong Kong title to their women’s doubles win at the MB Hanoi Cup in April. On Saturday they had beaten Sofia Sewing and Catherine Parenteau 11-4, 11-0, while Black and Jorja Johnson came from a game down to beat Rachel Rohrabacher and Parris Todd 4-11, 11-9, 11-2.
The mixed final then put Waters on the opposite side of the net from Bright. Waters and Johns, the top seeds, beat Bright and Patriquin 11-4, 11-3. They had dropped one point in their semi-final against Wei and Hunter Johnson, seeded 19th, while Bright and Patriquin needed three games, 11-2, 9-11, 11-9, to beat third seeds Jorja Johnson and JW Johnson.
Patriquin beats Johns, then loses to him
Staksrud and Patriquin, the second seeds, beat top seeds Johns and Tardio 11-6, 11-8 in the men’s doubles final. It reversed the MB Hanoi Cup final in April, which Johns and Tardio won 11-0, 7-11, 11-6.
That left Patriquin with an unusual Sunday. He beat Johns for the men’s doubles title, then lost to him in the mixed final later the same day.
Both finalists had clean paths through Saturday. Johns and Tardio beat Shimabukuro and JW Johnson 11-7, 11-6; Staksrud and Patriquin beat Connor Garnett and Dylan Frazier 11-9, 11-1. Earlier in the week Johns and Tardio had won the Johns brothers’ quarter-final 11-3, 11-3 against Collin Johns and Len Yang.
Why was the women’s singles final an upset?
Neither women’s singles finalist was a top-two seed. Castillo, the fourth seed, beat top seed Kaitlyn Christian 11-9, 5-11, 12-10 in the quarter-finals, and Dikosavljevic, seeded ninth, beat second seed Chao Yi Wang 11-8, 11-6.
Dikosavljevic then dropped four points in her semi-final against fifth seed Sahra Dennehy, 11-1, 11-3, while Castillo beat third seed Kiora Kunimoto 11-8, 11-7. The final was as one-sided: Dikosavljevic won 11-1, 11-5. It is her second women’s singles title on the PPA Tour Asia this season, after the MB Ho Chi Minh City Open in August.
The upsets were not confined to the women. In the men’s quarter-finals Khlif beat top seed Christopher Haworth 13-11, 11-3, so neither singles top seed reached Sunday. Our semi-final report covers Saturday’s singles in more detail.
What happened to Hong Kong’s Hong Kit Wong?
The home crowd’s best moment came on Friday. Hong Kit Wong, the seventh seed and 2025 Hong Kong Open men’s singles champion, held match point at 10-9 in the third game of his quarter-final against Federico Staksrud before losing 11-8, 9-11, 10-12. He had led the second game 5-0, according to the organiser.
Wong had reached the last eight by beating 14-year-old Francis Chi 8-11, 11-0, 11-2. After the Staksrud match he said: “Thank you so much to the Hong Kong fans in the crowd for their passionate support! I never expected so many people to come out and cheer for us. Without everyone’s cheers and encouragement, I wouldn’t have been able to play at such a high level.”
Nok Yiu Tang, Hong Kong’s other leading player, lost her women’s singles round-of-16 match to Chao Yi Wang 8-11, 4-11. She and Wang, seeded seventh in women’s doubles, also went out in the round of 16, to Mari Humberg and Cailyn Campbell. Athena Leung came through qualifying into the women’s singles main draw.
How big was the Hong Kong Slam?
The organiser, F-Sports Promotions, said the event brought together 895 players aged 9 to 71 from 22 countries and regions, with a professional purse of up to US$1.1 million and 1,500 ranking points. Kai Tak Arena was converted into 24 courts; the draws are on the PPA Tour Asia event page. Our pre-event seedings guide and event preview set out the draws and the format.
Hang Seng Bank’s Luanne Lim described it in August as “Asia’s first PPA 1500”. A year earlier the same venue hosted the Hong Kong Open with 104 professionals and 424 amateurs, the organiser said.
No champions’ quotes had been published by the PPA or the organiser at the time of writing. The PPA Tour Asia 2026 season is now complete.
