Brief
The short answer: The 2026 Oceanview USA Pickleball National Championships start today, Saturday 31 October, at Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego and run for nine days to Sunday 8 November. The opening weekend belongs to juniors, college players and wheelchair athletes; the professionals do not arrive on the draw sheet until Wednesday, and their medals are decided on 7 and 8 November. General admission is free all week.
Most national championships begin with the headliners. This one starts with the people who had to qualify. USA Pickleball, the sport’s governing body in the United States, says the Nationals were first held in 2009, which makes them the sport’s longest-standing national championship. Amateur players earn their places through the governing body’s Golden Ticket tournaments and its Tiered Point System. The slogan this year is “THE STAGE IS EARNED. NOT GIVEN.” It is a bit shouty, but it is accurate.
Who plays first?
According to the official schedule, today’s divisions are junior boys’ and girls’ doubles, the APP Selkirk U.S. Collegiate Series Championships, wheelchair co-ed doubles and mixed doubles for the 65-85+ age groups. Sunday adds junior mixed doubles and singles, wheelchair co-ed singles, and men’s doubles and women’s singles for 65-80+. The age-group amateur events then work down through the week, ending with the 19-49 divisions on 7 and 8 November.
The pro events start on Wednesday 4 November with the round of 32 in mixed doubles, men’s doubles and men’s singles. Semi-finals are on Saturday 7 November and the gold and bronze medal matches on Sunday 8 November, when Championship Court, presented by QVC, hosts the finale. On Tuesday 3 November there is a “Concert on the Court” in aid of the charity USA Pickleball Serves. The yacht rock band booked for it is called Yachty Got Back. I promise I have not made that up.
How big is it?
USA Pickleball’s figures for last year’s event, also held at Barnes, were about 10,000 attendees, including more than 2,500 athletes from 47 states and 20 countries, plus an estimated $3 million in regional economic impact. Sports San Diego named it Special Event of the Year at its 2026 Rising Tide Awards.
“Every athlete who steps onto the court has earned the opportunity to compete on this stage, and that is what makes this championship so special,” said Mike Nealy, chief executive of USA Pickleball, in the governing body’s announcement.
The bigger picture
The awkward fact, covered in detail in our analysis of the two championships finishing on 8 November, is that the PPA’s World Championships at Brookhaven end on the same Sunday. I won’t go over that argument again here. The short version is that the best stories from Barnes this week will probably come from the people who qualified their way in, not from the pro draws. That is no bad thing.
San Diego is seven hours behind London today and eight hours behind once US clocks go back on Sunday 1 November. First amateur results should come through on Saturday evening, London time. We will report the medal matches next weekend.
