Hong Kong’s big rematches, and a new chapter for Venezuela

All editions ·

Good morning, pickleballers.

The Hong Kong Slam has two compelling matchups in view: Hong Kit Wong gets another chance against Federico Staksrud, while Ben and Collin Johns are set to meet on opposite sides of the net in men’s doubles.

And in Venezuela, official recognition for pickleball brings a story that reaches back more than a century, from Albert Cherry’s early tennis efforts in Caracas to Leon Stango introducing pickleball in 2021.

Staksrud, Wong and the Johns brothers headline Hong Kong

Hong Kit Wong and Federico Staksrud meet again in men’s singles after their three-game quarter-final in Hanoi, where Staksrud came through 7-11, 11-6, 12-10. This time, Wong has the home crowd behind him at the Hang Seng Bank Hong Kong Slam.

The other drawline with family stakes is in men’s doubles. Top seeds Ben Johns and Gabriel Tardio are on course to face eighth seeds Collin Johns and Len Yang, putting the brothers across the net from each other with a place in the next round at stake.

The Hong Kong Slam is the first PPA Tour Asia 1500 event and the season-ending tournament. With the tour’s leading Asian players sharing the draw with established international professionals, each head-to-head offers a useful test of where the regional circuit’s strongest competitors stand.

Why it matters: Wong has already shown he can take Staksrud deep into a match. The question now is whether he can turn that close contest into a home-court win. The Johns brothers’ potential meeting adds a rare family rivalry to a tournament already packed with consequential matchups.

Two British pioneers, 130 years apart

English railway administrator Albert Cherry is credited with helping establish tennis in Caracas in the early 1890s. Around 130 years later, British-born Leon Stango introduced pickleball to Venezuela.

The IND’s October decision recognises pickleball as a sporting speciality. It does not mark the creation of the Asociación Venezolana de Pickleball. The AVP already serves as Venezuela’s national pickleball organisation and is connected to the Pickleball Federation of the Americas.

The next stage is the domestic legal and organisational work around the AVP’s structure. The story links a historic tennis club beside a railway line with a modern pickleball movement built through clubs, players and international connections.
