Korea’s retailers make their move as pickleball reaches a bigger screen

All editions ·

Good morning, pickleballers.

South Korea’s biggest retailers are beginning to treat pickleball as more than a line of equipment. FILA and Lotte have placed a regulation court inside one of Seoul’s most valuable shopping environments, creating a store where the product being sold is participation itself.

It is an unusually revealing commercial signal. Running became a mass market because brands helped turn it into a habit, a community and an identity. Korea’s retailers appear to believe pickleball could follow a similar route.

Elsewhere today, Manny Pacquiao’s MPPT secures a national broadcast home in the Philippines, while the first five professional draws of the unified PPA Tour Europe give Barcelona a chance to measure the depth beneath its headline names.

The Lead · South Korea

Korea’s retailers are not waiting for a pickleball boom. They are trying to build one.

FILA and Lotte Department Store have opened a 260-square-metre pickleball store inside Lotte World Mall in Seoul, complete with a full regulation court. Combined with the neighbouring Tennis Metro store, the development creates a 750-square-metre racket-sports zone in prime retail space.

The court can be booked through NAVER, coaches provide individual and group lessons, and customers buying a paddle can receive an introductory session or court time. Skechers is also placing pickleball inside a retail activation at Lotte Mall Eunpyeong, while Kwangdong Pharmaceutical has committed to supporting Korea Pickleball Association events through 2027.

The comparison with Korea’s running market matters because these companies understand how a recreational activity becomes a consumer culture. Their involvement does not prove that pickleball will reach the same scale, but it moves the sport from specialist facilities into places where ordinary shoppers can discover, try and purchase it in one visit.

For a young market, retail space can become sporting infrastructure.

Why Korea’s retailers are betting on pickleball
Philippines · MPPT

MPPT has found a national screen. Now it must create something worth returning to.

Manny Pacquiao’s Maharlika Pilipinas Pickleball Tour has agreed a broadcast partnership with Solar Sports ahead of its five-city Invitationals, which begin in October. Weekend coverage gives the new league a national television platform before its first ball has been struck.

The initial competition will feature 12 teams, each carrying between eight and ten players and at least two homegrown talents. Saturday’s single round-robin phase will lead into an eight-team Sunday playoff, with singles used to settle ties and ₱1 million available at each leg.

The agreement solves one of the league’s first problems by giving supporters a reliable place to watch. The harder work begins once the coverage starts. MPPT must make its regional teams distinct, introduce unfamiliar players properly and turn five weekends of matches into a connected season rather than a sequence of isolated broadcasts.

Distribution creates the possibility of an audience. The product will decide whether that audience comes back.

Europe · Barcelona Open

Barcelona has the names. The draw will reveal whether PPA Tour Europe has the depth.

The unified PPA Tour Europe begins at Tennis Despí with Zane Navratil, Grayson Goldin, Hannah Blatt and Spain’s Judit Castillo providing an established international level across five professional draws.

The scale extends well beyond those four players. Barcelona has published fields of 42 in men’s singles and 28 in women’s singles, alongside 33 men’s doubles teams, 22 women’s doubles teams and 38 mixed doubles pairings. All five divisions use double elimination, giving players an opportunity to respond even if the opening round goes against them.

Mixed doubles may supply the most immediate measure. Navratil partners Castillo and Goldin joins Blatt, but European combinations including Boris Paque and Rebecca Pijls, James Ling and Ellie Tomkinson, and Viktoria Kanichova and Mikołaj Biedermann give the draw enough substance to test whether the headline pairings can establish control.

One tournament cannot define a new circuit. It can establish the first competitive reference points.

The stories behind the stories

Seoul was already running short of courts. The new retail developments arrive in a market where public facilities and converted recreational spaces have struggled to keep pace with demand.

MPPT’s broadcast deal follows a much larger structural bet. Pacquiao is building regional franchises around a model familiar from Philippine basketball, with local identity intended to make unfamiliar players matter quickly.
