Players Buy Better Paddles. Ignore Their Shoes.
A new performance debate is emerging in pickleball, and it has nothing to do with paddle technology.

World Pickleball Report

Players Buy Better Paddles. Ignore Their Shoes.

Pickleball players have spent years upgrading the thing in their hand.

Today’s lead story asks whether the sport has ignored the thing underneath every split step, recovery and off-balance reach: the shoe.

Lead Feature: Has Pickleball Ignored Its Most Important Piece Of Equipment?

The pickleball equipment conversation has usually started with the paddle. Materials, shape, surface, spin, power, control. The same questions, repeated every time a new model arrives.

Bob Winskowicz, founder and CEO of SQAIRZ, wants players to look lower. His argument is not that shoes are more glamorous than paddles. It is that footwear is the only point of contact between the player and the court, which means balance, stability and ground force all begin there.

That matters in a sport built around small-space movement. Pickleball does not always look physically violent from the outside, but it asks players to stop, start, shift, reach and recover while often hitting from compromised positions.

What matters: The next serious performance debate in pickleball may not be about what happens when the paddle meets the ball, but what happens before the player even swings.

Pressure Points: The Injury Conversation Is Getting More Specific

It is easy to talk about pickleball injuries in general terms. Too many matches, too little warm-up, not enough recovery, bad luck. The more useful question is where the physical risk actually begins.

The footwear discussion matters because it makes injury prevention less abstract. If a player’s foot is sliding inside the shoe, or the shoe cannot resist lateral stress, the body has to compensate. That does not guarantee injury, but it does create a worse starting point.

What matters: Pickleball’s next stage of player care will depend on practical detail, not broad warnings about doing more stretching.

The Wider View: Equipment Is Becoming A Smarter Conversation

The best equipment stories in pickleball are no longer just about buying something new. They are about understanding the demands of the sport more clearly.

That is why the shoe conversation is interesting. It is not another version of “this product will fix your game”. It raises a better question: are players matching their equipment to how pickleball actually moves?

What matters: As the sport gets more serious, players will need to judge equipment by function, not just by habit, colourway or whatever the best player at the club happens to be wearing.

The July issue is live, and two of its strongest pieces look backwards with purpose: Bevan Geissmann’s quiet role in Australian pickleball and the story of Joan Pritchard, the woman who gave the sport its name.

Both stories are reminders that pickleball’s future is easier to understand when the people who shaped its foundations are not written out of the record.
