The Report

MLP’s next commissioner has a much bigger job

All editions ·

Good morning, pickleballers.

Major League Pickleball needs a new commissioner. The inevitable conversation is already about names, but the more interesting question is what that person will actually be hired to do.

MLP enters its next phase with record reported audiences, 20 franchise ownership groups, a potentially significant reset to its player-acquisition system and a much larger corporate structure sitting above it. Replacing Samin Odhwani is therefore about considerably more than filling an empty chair.

Elsewhere today, the fourth Uganda Open gives us another reason to look closely at the competitive network forming across East Africa, six CNPL teams prepare for Waterloo, and the APP’s 50+ season continues developing storylines of its own.

The Lead · Major League Pickleball

Forget the shortlist for a moment. What does MLP actually need from its next commissioner?

Samin Odhwani is preparing to leave MLP after a season in which the league reported record television audiences and attendance. That has already produced speculation about potential successors, but treating this simply as a recruitment story misses what has changed around the position.

The next commissioner inherits 20 franchise ownership groups, an unfinished debate around 2027 player-acquisition economics, the challenge of turning city names into genuinely local businesses and a league now operating inside Pickleball Inc. after Apollo Sports Capital led a $225 million structured investment into the wider organisation.

There is a media question too. MLP’s 2026 Finals averaged 773,000 viewers on CBS and Pickleballtv consumption increased, which means the next phase is no longer simply about getting team pickleball on television. It is about establishing what MLP is worth inside a much larger media proposition.

The appointment will matter. The mandate may tell us even more.

What MLP’s next commissioner actually has to solve
Africa · Uganda Open

Kampala, Nairobi, Dar es Salaam. The same countries keep meeting.

The fourth Uganda Open brought players from Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania and Germany to Old Kampala Arena, with Uganda and Kenya sharing the gold medals and participation increasing significantly from previous editions.

The more interesting number, though, may be four. Repeat tournaments matter because East Africa is beginning to move beyond isolated national events. Earlier this year Tanzania, Kenya, DRC and Rwanda contested an East Africa Regional Pickleball Championship in Dar es Salaam, while Nairobi and Tanzania have both attracted players from neighbouring countries.

There is no formal East African tour linking these events, and the competitive infrastructure remains fragmented. Yet the behaviour required to build one is increasingly visible: players are crossing borders, opponents are meeting again and tournaments are beginning to acquire meaning from what happened elsewhere.

The next breakthrough may not be another tournament. It may be connecting the ones that already exist.

Why the fourth Uganda Open matters
Canada · CNPL Playoffs

Twenty-eight matches gave us the evidence. Waterloo decides what it means.

Six teams remain in the race for the 2026 CNPL Championship, with London Smash and Toronto United earning direct passage into Saturday’s semi-finals when the playoffs begin in Waterloo on Friday.

Below them, the opening matchups contain some unusually clear regular-season evidence. Grand River Rapids went 4-0 against Northern Lights, while Montreal Lions finished 3-1 against Vancouver Owls — although one of the players central to Montreal’s mixed-doubles advantage, Ernesto Fajardo, is now wearing London colours.

The two teams waiting above them have vulnerabilities of their own. Toronto’s season series against Vancouver finished 2-2 and its women’s doubles combinations went 0-4 in those meetings, while London’s one regular-season loss to Montreal contained another clue about where the Lions might attack them.

The bracket is simple. The matchups underneath it are anything but.

The questions that will decide the CNPL playoffs
APP · Champions 50+

Ptaszek-Kochis and Bouzidi double up as another APP season takes shape

Karin Ptaszek-Kochis and Youssef Bouzidi were the leading performers from the AARP Champions Pro competition in Overland Park, winning two gold medals apiece, while Carolina Lopez Ascarate collected one gold and two silvers.

Lee Whitwell, Dayne Gingrich and Tommy Ho were among the other 50+ Pro gold medallists, continuing a Champions season that is increasingly worth following independently rather than treating as an appendix to the main APP draw.

The APP scheduled Champions competition across its domestic Tour in 2026, which means repeat winners, changing partnerships and season-long trajectories now have enough continuity to become stories in their own right.

The stories behind the stories

MLP’s 2027 problem did not begin today. The league’s trade window already exposed how difficult it is for franchises to value current players while the next acquisition system remains unsettled.

Toronto changed the CNPL playoff picture in Burnaby. United went 6-0 at the Season Finale, while Grand River supplied the warning underneath London’s otherwise dominant season by sweeping the Smash 4-0.

East Africa already had a competitive thread. Earlier this year, WPM examined the regional championship in Dar es Salaam and the Kenya-Tanzania rivalry that followed it to Nairobi. Uganda now adds another piece to that map.
