The World Pickleball League (WPBL) returns for its second season on January 27, 2026, in Mumbai. All eyes are on the defending champions, the Bengaluru Jawans, as they prepare to open their title defence against Pune United FC. The team is once again anchored by star player Katerina Stewart, who has declared her intent to build a dynasty.

Katerina Stewart, a former WTA tennis player ranked as high as 158 globally, was the decisive factor in Bengaluru’s Season 1 triumph, earning Player of the Tournament honours. Now competing full-time on the PPA and APP tours, Stewart brings world-class experience to the Indian franchise league. Under the guidance of coach Oliver Strecker, the Jawans are looking to evolve. “We aim beyond defending the crown,” Stewart stated, emphasising a desire to create a “sustainable team identity” rather than relying solely on past success.
The league itself is expanding, with “fresher rivalries” and higher stakes expected in Mumbai. Stewart’s personal goal to break into the global Top 10 by the end of 2025 aligns with the franchise’s ambition to be a powerhouse. Her ability to “steady the ship” under pressure was key to their previous title run, and her leadership will be tested immediately against Pune United.
The World Pickleball Verdict
The WPBL represents the successful export of the franchise sports model to pickleball. By centring teams around international marquee players like Katerina Stewart, the league creates a product that appeals to both local Indian fans and global observers. The “Bengaluru Jawans” brand—aiming for a legacy rather than a one-off win—mimics the successful structures seen in the IPL (cricket). If Season 2 captures the same energy, India could firmly establish itself as the commercial hub of professional pickleball in Asia.
