Hong Kong's Home Hopes, Pickleball's Drug-Testing Questions & Japan's Team Revolution

All editions ·

Good morning, pickleballers.

Hong Kong's biggest tournament is beginning to find its own story. Zane Navratil and JW Johnson are out of men's singles, while two home contenders have earned places in the last 16.

Elsewhere, plans for official anti-doping testing at the European Open have exposed a question in WPF's published rules. And Fabrizio Lavezzari looks at the community behind Japan's Burger King Cup, where being part of a team matters well beyond the final score.

The Lead · PPA Asia

Navratil and JW Johnson depart. Hong Kong's home challenge survives.

The Hong Kong Slam's men's singles draw has already lost two familiar American names. Top seed Christopher Haworth defeated Zane Navratil 11-3, 12-10, while Eric Oncins beat JW Johnson 11-5, 11-7 to earn a meeting with Federico Staksrud.

Hong Kit Wong kept the home interest alive by beating his men's doubles partner Eunggwon Kim 11-5, 11-5. Nok Yiu Tang also progressed, defeating Mihae Kwon 11-9, 11-3. Both now face demanding Round of 16 matches, against Francis Chi and Chao Yi Wang respectively.

The leading seeds remain formidable. Haworth's victory was no upset, and Johnson's doubles pedigree should not obscure the different demands of singles. But the last-16 draw offers a more meaningful examination of how Asia's established players compare with the international field.

Why it matters: Hong Kong has proved it can attract leading professionals. Now Wong, Tang and their regional rivals have the opportunity to show how deeply they can compete in the draw.

Anti-doping testing is coming. Which WPF rules will apply?

The World Pickleball Federation and European Pickleball Federation will introduce official in-competition anti-doping testing at the European Open in Türkiye on 5 November. Athletes in the selected category have been notified, and education on clean sport and testing procedures is planned.

But WPM's examination of WPF's published documents found conflicting effective dates. Its Integrity page says the rules took effect on 1 October 2026, while its published anti-doping rulebook gives 1 January 2027. The announcement does not identify which operative rules will apply to the November tests.

That does not mean testing cannot proceed under a valid framework. It does mean athletes should have clarity about who administers the process, what regulations govern it, and how any findings or appeals will be handled.

Why it matters: Anti-doping is a practical responsibility of international sport. Its credibility depends on clear, consistent procedures, not simply the announcement that testing will take place.

At Japan's Burger King Cup, your match is only part of the story.

At Tokyo's Ariake Tennis Forest, the second PJL Burger King Cup brought corporate teams, beginners, advanced competitors, over-50s and professionals into one four-day event. Contributor Fabrizio Lavezzari reports figures of 266 team entries and 1,076 participant entries across six categories.

Four-person teams in the general and professional divisions played men's, women's and mixed doubles. A professional encounter tied after four matches could be settled by a singles DreamBreaker. The reported professional champions were The Pickle Slices, while other categories had their own champions and communities.

Fabrizio's point reaches beyond the results. The person watching at courtside is often another competitor, a teammate or somebody whose own fortunes are tied to the outcome. The event also offered a connection to Japan's emerging corporate-backed PX League.

Why it matters: Team formats give relationships formed through local sessions a competitive purpose. Japan's Cup shows the different ways a sporting community can share the same event.
