By Gordon Watson | World Pickleball Magazine

If someone had told me six years ago that one day I’d be building a Palm Springs-inspired pickleball ranch in regional Australia, I probably would have laughed.

Yet here I am.

Standing on my own championship-sized pickleball court as the Queensland winter sun sets over the gum trees, paddle in hand, mates on the court, cold drinks waiting in the fridge and strawberries ready to share.

Life really doesn’t get much better.

Ever since I discovered pickleball, I dreamed of having my own court. Like most pickleball tragics, I’d often imagine walking out the back door with a paddle in hand and playing whenever the mood struck.

But when I moved to Rockhampton almost three years ago, that dream evolved into something much bigger.

It wasn’t just about building a court anymore.

It became about creating a destination.

A place where friends from around Australia, and hopefully around the world, could come, stay, play, relax and experience everything that makes Central Queensland so special.

The vision became a Palm Springs-inspired Pickleball Ranch.

Six months into the project, it’s finally beginning to feel real.

Welcome to Capricorn Court

Situated in Rockyview on the outskirts of Rockhampton, the property enjoys one major advantage—space.

Unlike suburban blocks, properties here are much larger, making it possible to create something truly unique.

The centrepiece is a full championship-sized pickleball court built to tournament specifications.

Being located on the Tropic of Capricorn, there really was only one name for it, Capricorn Court.

More Than Just a Pickleball Court

The colours of Capricorn Court weren’t chosen from a catalogue; they were inspired by the landscape that surrounds it.

The vibrant aqua-green playing surface reflects the crystal-clear waters of nearby Great Keppel Island and the southern reaches of the Great Barrier Reef. The rich ocean-blue pays tribute to the Coral Sea, which shapes so much of life along the Capricorn Coast, while the earthy surrounds echo the rugged beauty of Central Queensland’s bushland, sandstone ranges and red soils.

If you’re following how the global game is shifting day by day, the World Pickleball Report breaks this down in our daily briefing.

Every time I step onto the court, I’m reminded that I live in one of Australia’s most spectacular regions.

For me, Capricorn Court isn’t just a place to play pickleball. It’s a celebration of where I live. Every colour tells a story, connecting the court to the reef, the ocean and the landscapes that make Central Queensland unlike anywhere else in the world.

My hope is that visitors don’t simply come here to play pickleball, they leave with a desire to explore the incredible region that inspired the court itself.

While the landscaping has just started. The are palms yet to be planted.

The Palm Springs vibe is only just beginning. But already, the dream is becoming reality.

The private cabin-style studio is complete, friends have started dropping by for games, and I’ve even begun coaching.

My hope is simple.

That one-day pickleball travellers’ friends from around Australia and the world will have Capricorn Court marked on their bucket list.

A place where strangers become doubles partners…

Opponents become mates…

And nobody leaves without having at least one more game than they planned.

Just don’t forget to bring your paddle.

I’ve got the strawberries covered.
