Pickleball’s Biggest Move Happened Off Court
World Pickleball Report
Pickleball’s Biggest Move Happened Off CourtSport likes to remember the people who lift trophies and sign cheques. It is less reliable at remembering the person who introduced them.
Today’s stories are about the relationships underneath the visible game: one that changed professional pickleball, one turning courts into business networks, and several that decided opening day in Grand Rapids.
Lead Feature: The Introduction That Changed the Business
Most viewers know Dave Fleming as the voice behind professional pickleball’s biggest matches. His most consequential contribution may have happened nowhere near a commentary desk.
Speaking on the Pickleballers Podcast, Fleming explained how a chance golf-cart conversation with Hank Haney led him to Tom Dundon, first through competitive games in Dallas and then through introductions to the sport’s leading players.
Fleming eventually connected Dundon with PPA founder Connor Pardoe. Dundon’s investment later helped bring the PPA Tour, Major League Pickleball, Pickleball Central and Pickleball.com into the same corporate structure.
That makes Fleming more than the man who helped professional pickleball sound credible on television. He occupied a rare position between players, broadcasters, organisers and business leaders, then recognised a connection that could move the sport somewhere new.
What matters: Pickleball’s modern structure was not created by capital alone. It depended on trust, access and someone who knew which people needed to meet.

The Wider View: Vietnam Replaces the Golf Course
Vietnam’s World Entrepreneur Tournament will bring more than 1,600 participants from over 80 countries and territories to Da Nang in September. The unusual part is not the size. It is the reason everyone is being brought together.
The event is built around entrepreneurs rather than elite athletes or national teams. Across 26 doubles divisions, competition becomes the setting for introductions, investment conversations and international partnerships.
Golf performed that role for generations. Pickleball offers a shorter, more social alternative, with rotating partnerships and fewer barriers for people who did not grow up inside the sport.
What matters: Vietnam is not merely staging a tournament. It is testing whether pickleball can become part of how modern business relationships are formed.

Beyond the Score: Grand Rapids Rewards the Right Combinations
Opening day at MLP’s Mid-Season Tournament produced four 3-0 sweeps, two 3-1 victories and two DreamBreakers. Beneath those different results sat a remarkably consistent pattern.
Las Vegas, Miami, SoCal and Orlando all used women’s doubles to establish control before closing their ties in mixed. Utah and Chicago both lost men’s doubles, then recovered by sweeping the two mixed rubbers.
Even the DreamBreakers only happened because mixed doubles first kept Florida and Phoenix alive. The lesson was not that one discipline no longer matters. It was that MLP rewards line-ups whose relationships work in several combinations.
What matters: Star names win individual games, but balanced partnerships keep creating more routes through an MLP tie.
