Fake JOOLA paddles, Hong Kong’s biggest test, and PICKLR opens in Tokyo

All editions ·

Good morning, pickleballers.

Vietnam’s pickleball boom has produced another, less welcome sign of a market becoming commercially significant. Authorities in Hung Yen found 310 counterfeit JOOLA paddles among 450 paddles at a single business, exposing a consumer challenge developing alongside the country’s rapid rise on court.

We also look ahead to a Hong Kong Slam bringing more than 1,000 players and many of the world’s leading professionals under one roof, while Fabrizio Lavezzari takes us inside PICKLR’s first permanent venue in Japan.

310 fake JOOLA paddles reveal pickleball’s next challenge.

Authorities in Hung Yen discovered 310 JOOLA-branded paddles that were subsequently determined to be counterfeit, alongside another 140 unbranded paddles of unclear origin. The trader was fined VND102.5 million following the July inspection.

The bigger story sits behind the seizure. Vietnam now has enough pickleball players, equipment demand and premium-brand recognition to support a substantial consumer economy. That makes authenticity, trusted retailers and consumer education increasingly important alongside courts, tournaments and professional players.

Asia · Hong Kong Slam

The world’s elite meet Asia’s next wave at Kai Tak.

More than 1,000 players from over 25 countries and territories have registered for the Hong Kong Slam, including more than 340 Pro registrations. Ben Johns, Anna Leigh Waters and every player inside the top six of the men’s and women’s World Pickleball Rankings are confirmed.

Asia’s first PPA 1500 will put up to US$1.1 million in professional prize money and payouts on the line inside Kai Tak Arena. Yet the most interesting test may be what happens when the established professional hierarchy and a rapidly developing Asian player base finally meet at this scale.

Japan · Tokyo

The dream becomes reality as PICKLR opens in Japan.

PICKLR TOKYO TOYOSU opened on September 25, giving the club brand its first permanent foothold in Japan. The approximately 20,000-square-foot facility has seven dedicated indoor hard courts alongside locker rooms, a lounge, pro shop and event space.

Japan correspondent Fabrizio Lavezzari visited the opening almost exactly a year after first speaking to Nippon Pickleball Holdings CEO Kenton Stehr about the plans. For a Japanese playing community accustomed to shared gymnasiums, Toyosu offers a very different picture of what permanent pickleball infrastructure can look like.
