Today’s global roundup leads with a deepening governance crisis within the Malaysia Pickleball Association, which faces potential deregistration following direct regulatory intervention. On the professional courts, the PPA Newport Beach Open has delivered a string of significant upsets and notable injury returns, while major structural advancements in adaptive pickleball have been officially announced for both the United Kingdom and the United States.
Malaysia Pickleball Association Faces Deregistration Amid Governance Violations
The Malaysia Pickleball Association (MPA) has been officially suspended by the national Sports Commissioner’s Office, initiating a statutory thirty-day window for the governing body to justify its continued existence or face total deregistration. The suspension, enacted on 27 February under the Sports Development Act 1997, follows a sustained regulatory investigation into a series of severe constitutional violations. Sports Commissioner Arrifin Ghani confirmed the regulatory action was prompted by systemic governance failures, including the conduction of annual general meetings between 2021 and 2023 without the constitutionally mandated quorum. Furthermore, committee elections were compromised by individuals voting without legal entitlement under Clause 10.2 of the association’s constitution, and several members were appointed rather than properly elected. The immediate catalyst for regulatory intervention was the unilateral appointment of current president Delima Ibrahim by outgoing president Farrell Choo in July 2025, bypassing the constitutionally mandated succession protocols. While the MPA attempted to rectify these issues through a remedial Annual General Meeting on 13 January, the subsequent announcement of the new executive committee triggered severe backlash from the domestic player base. Competitors heavily criticised the newly appointed leadership across official communication channels, questioning their practical experience in the sport and demanding the publication of their Dynamic Universal Pickleball Ratings. Additional concerns were raised regarding structural conflicts of interest, specifically Ibrahim holding both the presidency and the position of competition chairwoman. Despite the association’s assertions that it has complied fully with all government directives to avoid deregistration, the regulatory body has maintained the suspension. Ghani noted that Ibrahim claimed ignorance of several historical irregularities, but he firmly stated that ignorance of the law is not a recognised defence. The MPA remains the sole recognised national body for the sport in Malaysia during this probationary period, but failure to provide a satisfactory formal explanation by late March will result in its dissolution.
PPA Newport Beach Open Defined by High-Profile Returns and Draw Disruptions
The opening stages of the Professional Pickleball Association’s Newport Beach Open in California have been characterised by high-profile injury returns and significant disruptions to the seeded draws. The men’s singles bracket was heavily impacted by the successful return of Yates Johnson, who secured his place in the quarterfinals following a demanding ten-month absence due to a groin injury sustained in September 2025. Johnson delivered a commanding straight-games victory over the twenty-seventh seed, Connor Mogle, winning 11-0, 11-8, scheduling a highly anticipated quarterfinal encounter with the second seed, Federico Staksrud. The singles draw experienced further volatility courtesy of unseeded Indian international Armaan Bhatia, who orchestrated a major upset by eliminating the twenty-second seed, Tom Protzek. After dominating the opening game 11-1 and surrendering the second, Bhatia closed the deciding game 11-4 to progress to the round of sixteen, following his earlier elimination of the thirteenth seed, Jay Devilliers. The instability extended entirely into the men’s doubles format, where the unseeded partnership of Connor Mogle and Andre Mercado eliminated the sixth-seeded duo of Jocelyn Devilliers and Jaume Martinez Vich. In a highly volatile matchup, Mogle and Mercado recovered from a severe 1-11 second-game collapse to secure the deciding game 11-5, advancing to face Koller and Khlif. As the tournament progresses to the quarterfinal stages, broadcast coverage shifts to the Carvana Grandstand and Humana Championship courts, where remaining top seeds, including Anna Leigh Waters, Ben Johns, and Christian Alshon, must navigate an increasingly unpredictable competitive landscape. The early-round attrition demonstrates the escalating depth of the professional talent pool, where historical seeding is providing minimal protection against a wave of emerging international challengers.
Structural Advancements Set for Global Adaptive Pickleball
Major structural and competitive advancements for adaptive pickleball have been confirmed this week, highlighted by the introduction of a dedicated wheelchair rating system and the launch of a pioneering hybrid tournament format in Stourbridge. The Dynamic Universal Pickleball Rating (DUPR) organisation announced the development of an exclusive evaluation framework for wheelchair athletes, scheduled to officially debut at the 2026 Franklin United States Open Pickleball Championships in Naples, Florida. The bespoke system is designed to integrate seamlessly into the existing global DUPR platform, ensuring adaptive athletes are evaluated within the primary global database used by millions of players worldwide. Endorsed by US Open president Ben Weinberger, the metric aims to standardise tournament bracketing, eliminate heavily mismatched early-round encounters, and provide adaptive competitors with reliable data to track their long-term developmental progression. Simultaneously, in the United Kingdom, the Courtside Pickleball Club in Stourbridge has partnered with Pickleball England to host a groundbreaking hybrid inclusive tournament on Sunday, 8 March. The event architecture mandates fully integrated teams comprising two adaptive competitors, competing either standing or in a wheelchair, and two non-disabled players. The competition schedule will heavily feature hybrid doubles fixtures alongside dedicated adaptive and non-disabled matches, utilising the facility’s eight newly constructed cushioned courts. The initiative, supported by equipment provisions of one hundred balls from The Pickleball Store, represents a deliberate strategy by British administrators to embed accessibility directly into the foundational growth of the domestic game. By forcing cross-demographic collaboration in a competitive setting, the tournament acts as a visible pilot programme designed to establish a new operational standard for inclusive club environments, with organisers intending this to be the first of many such events. Together, these transatlantic developments provide the necessary infrastructure and competitive integration required to accelerate the sport’s global ambitions.
Contract Evolutions and Regional Dominance in the Global Game
The professional operational landscape continues to evolve as elite players negotiate increased autonomy, while regional tournaments outside North America demonstrate rapid maturation. Clarification has emerged regarding the competitive future of professional athlete Quang Duong following his recently announced agreement with the Association of Pickleball Players (APP) Tour. Duc Duong, the athlete’s manager and father, confirmed that the contract is strictly non-exclusive and limited to a mandatory commitment of merely four APP events for the current season. This hybrid arrangement represents a significant departure from the strict exclusivity contracts that have recently dominated the professional circuit. By rejecting a restrictive lock-in, Duong preserves comprehensive scheduling autonomy, enabling him to actively pursue independent opportunities on the global circuit. This flexibility is already being exercised, with the player confirming his forthcoming participation in four events on the Pickleball D-Joy Tour 2026 in Malaysia. Meanwhile, the Australian domestic circuit reached a new benchmark for competitive endurance at the 2026 Western Australia Pickleball Championships, held at the Ocean Ridge Tennis Club. The regional event was dominated by the dual achievements of Andy Horridge and Gary Thoroughgood, who each secured rare triple crown victories. Operating at the elite tier, Horridge produced a flawless campaign to capture the Men’s Singles Open, the Men’s Doubles Open alongside Michael Russ, and the Mixed Doubles Open in partnership with his sister, Aleisha Horridge. In the senior brackets, Thoroughgood demonstrated exceptional physical conditioning to match the achievement, claiming gold in the over-60s singles and doubles formats, before dropping down an age category to secure the over-50s mixed doubles title alongside Rosa Morris. The seamless execution of the heavily populated multi-format draws reinforces Western Australia’s capacity to host significant ranking events, validating Australia’s strategic investment in robust regional hubs.
