What’s the Score?
The infrastructure for pickleball in the United Kingdom took another step forward this Saturday with the inauguration of a new venue in Stourbridge. The opening was headlined by an exhibition match featuring Pei Chuan Kao and other top UK pros, celebrating the sport’s rapid growth in the West Midlands.
Hit it deeper!
Pei Chuan Kao, one of the most recognisable names in British pickleball, led a star-studded lineup that included Thaddea Lock, Ben Cawston, Harvey Ravenscroft, and Ewan Skillicorn. The event was designed to showcase elite-level play while welcoming the community; visitors were given the chance to step onto the court and play alongside the athletes.
The demand for court time in the UK often “exceeds available court time,” making new facilities like the one in Stourbridge vital for the sport’s sustainability. The launch was attended by local dignitaries, including Dudley Mayor Cllr Pete Lee, and Karen Mitchell, the CEO of Pickleball England. Mitchell’s presence highlighted the strategic importance of expanding facility access to meet the “surging” participation numbers in leisure centers across the country. The event also prioritised inclusivity, featuring wheelchair pickleball sessions to demonstrate the sport’s accessibility.
The World Pickleball Verdict
While the US struggles with noise complaints, the UK is currently in a “land grab” phase, desperately needing indoor venues to house a growing player base. The Stourbridge opening represents a successful model for this growth: combining local government support (the Mayor), national governance (Pickleball England), and star power (Pei Chuan Kao) to launch new hubs. If the UK can continue to open facilities at this pace, it will avoid the bottleneck that often stifles minor sports as they attempt to go mainstream.
