Mumbai, India – The intersection of glamour and grit was on full display this week at the Jio World Garden as the World Pickleball League (WPBL) kicked off its highly anticipated second season. The league has embraced a “spotainment” philosophy, launching with a star-studded Celebrity Pickleball Showdown featuring Indian cinema icons like Samantha Ruth Prabhu and Riteish Deshmukh. Following the flashbulbs, the serious competition began, featuring 56 elite players from 18 countries competing across eight franchises.

The WPBL is modeling itself after the massive success of cricket leagues in India, using franchise teams owned by celebrities to drive mass appeal. Owners include cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar and filmmaker Atlee, ensuring the league remains in the headlines. But the level of play promises to match the hype. The season opener featured a rematch of last year’s finalists, the Bengaluru Jawans and Pune United. Bengaluru’s coach, Oliver Strecker, emphasised that “Season 2 is about raising our standards,” focusing on consistency under pressure.

The league has expanded significantly, now hosting 120 matches over a tight 13-day schedule. This condensed format is designed to maintain high intensity and viewer retention. Matches are being broadcast live on Sony LIV and Eurosport India, ensuring a wide reach. New franchises like the Rajasthan United and Mumbai Pickle Power are looking to disrupt the established order, with coaches emphasizing “energy,” “intent,” and “adaptability” as the keys to surviving the fast-paced season.
