The World Pickleball League (WPBL) is set to launch its second season with a spectacular fusion of entertainment and elite sport. Kicking off on January 24 at Mumbai’s Jio World Garden, the league will open with a “Celebrity Pickleball Showdown” featuring team owners and Bollywood stars. Simultaneously, the league has signalled its competitive seriousness by attracting top global talent, with the Hyderabad Superstars signing English powerhouse Louis Laville to lead their championship charge.
Hit it deeper!
The WPBL is pioneering a unique model that leverages India’s obsession with celebrity culture to drive sports engagement. The curtain-raiser will see celebrities like Samantha Ruth Prabhu, Atlee, and Riteish Deshmukh taking the court alongside their players. WPBL CEO Gaurav Natekar emphasised that this format brings fans “right on top of the action,” creating an atmosphere that blends a red-carpet event with a sporting contest.
However, beneath the glitz lies a serious competitive engine. The signing of Louis Laville by the Hyderabad Superstars is a statement of intent. Laville is European royalty in the sport—a six-time English National Champion with 79 professional gold medals and a history of success in the WPBL, having led Pune United to the finals in Season 1. Known for his fast hands and tactical acumen, Laville praised the WPBL as “one of the most competitive and well-run leagues” he has played in, citing the intensity of the franchise format.
The season proper begins on January 27, featuring 56 players from 18 nations competing in 120 matches over a gruelling 13-day schedule. This density of play, combined with the mix of international pros and Indian talent, promises a high-octane viewing experience.
The World Pickleball Verdict
The WPBL is successfully executing a strategy that other leagues struggle to master: the “edutainment” of a niche sport. By attaching massive celebrity brands to the teams, they ensure eyeballs on the product; by signing legitimate world-class talents like Laville, they ensure the product is worth watching.
Laville’s return and his high praise for the league validate the WPBL’s standing in the global circuit. It proves that India is becoming a lucrative and respected destination for professional pickleballers, not just an exhibition stop. If the Hyderabad Superstars can leverage Laville’s experience to win the title, it will further cement the idea that the WPBL is a league where the world’s best come to compete, not just to vacation.
