What’s the Score?
The hierarchy of collegiate pickleball was upended this weekend at the APP Selkirk Collegiate Series. The University of Delaware (UD) Blue Hens, entering the knockout rounds as a modest #7 seed, pulled off a stunning run to claim the title. In doing so, they systematically dismantled the University of Virginia (UVA) program, defeating three separate UVA teams in succession to lift the trophy.
Hit it deeper!
Saturday’s pool play suggested a UVA coronation was inevitable; the Cavaliers secured the top three seeds and looked dominant. Sunday, however, belonged to Delaware. The Blue Hens began their giant-killing spree in the quarterfinals with a 3-0 sweep of the #2 seed UVA squad. They followed up with a 3-1 semifinal victory over the #3 seed. The final against the top-seeded UVA 1 team was a classic, coming down to a decisive singles tiebreaker. Delaware prevailed 21-14, completing a historic “sweep of the sweep.” The victory places UD firmly in the conversation for the National Championships, alongside other strong performers like the University of Iowa (13-3) and UConn (11-5).
The World Pickleball Verdict
This result is a wake-up call for the collegiate landscape. The University of Virginia has long been the standard-bearer for excellence, but Delaware’s depth and resilience prove that the talent gap is vanishing. For a #7 seed to run the gauntlet against the top three seeds—all from the same rival school—demonstrates a mental toughness that champions are made of. With the National Championships looming, the field is now wide open. The “dynasty” narrative is on hold; parity has arrived in college pickleball.
