What’s the Score?

The Canadian National Pickleball League (CNPL) is expanding its footprint westward. In partnership with the “GOOD Games,” the league will host the inaugural GOOD Games Calgary Winter Pickleball Cup at the BMO Centre from February 13-15, 2026. This event is designed not just as a tournament, but as a multi-sport “festival” that mimics a regional Olympics, blending elite CNPL showcases with open amateur brackets.

Hit it deeper!

The GOOD Games concept is unique in the pickleball world. It integrates the sport into a broader cultural event featuring food trucks, live music, and eight other sports, creating an atmosphere that transcends a typical gymnasium tournament. Following successful iterations in Ontario, this Calgary expansion represents a major strategic push to capture the Western Canadian market.

The event will feature twelve dedicated courts and “Showcase Matches” where the best players in Western Canada will compete under professional conditions. Uniquely, pros and amateurs will play side-by-side in the same venue, maintaining the community ethos that defines the sport. Commissioner Mike McAninch described the partnership as a union of organisations “rooted in community engagement,” aiming to promote active lifestyles through a “festival energy”.

The World Pickleball Verdict

The GOOD Games represents the “festivalisation” of pickleball, a trend that is becoming essential for the sport’s commercial viability. By bundling pickleball with other sports and entertainment, the CNPL is ensuring that tournaments appeal to families and casual fans, not just hardcore competitors. This model—turning a tournament into a weekend destination—is likely the blueprint for how regional leagues will survive and thrive outside of the major American tours.
