Rate Vegas Cup: Stars Struggle and Shine as Semifinalists Emerge from Sin City Showdowns
Las Vegas, USA – Day one of the Rate Vegas Cup, presented by Holland America, delivered intense action and stunning upsets, setting the stage for high-stakes semifinals across all professional divisions.
In men's singles, No. 22 Marshall Brown continued his remarkable run, securing his first-ever PPA semifinal berth by defeating the No. 4 seed, Connor Garnett. Brown showcased incredible resilience, rallying to win in three games (11-9, 11-2) after dropping the opening stanza—the third straight match he accomplished this feat. Brown attributed his success in the progressive draw to avoiding exhaustion, focusing instead on hard serves and aggressive third shots. He admitted he rarely trains fitness, calling his deep run "kind of intuitive".
Women’s singles saw former tennis star No. 11 Genie Bouchard make headlines with a hard-fought quarterfinal victory over No. 14 Jorja Johnson. The Canadian overcame major adversity in the decisive third game, fighting off five match points before eventually winning 13-11. Bouchard advances to face No. 2 Kate Fahey on Saturday. The other women's semifinal features top-seed Anna Leigh Waters against No. 3 Kaitlyn Christian.
Top seeds also encountered resistance in doubles play. In mixed doubles, the dynamic duo of No. 1 Anna Leigh Waters and Ben Johns dropped their opening game 8-11 against No. 6 Rachel Rohrabacher and Andrei Daescu, but leveraged their vast experience to rally for 11-7 and 11-9 wins. Johns acknowledged that Rohrabacher and Daescu put "a lot of extra pressure" on them, forcing the superstars to "put your head down, play points, and try to be solid".
In women’s doubles, Waters and partner Anna Bright cruised to an 11-1, 11-2 quarterfinal victory against No. 11 Brooke Buckner and Zoey Wang. The only hiccup came early in the second game when Waters needed a medical timeout after being struck by Bright’s paddle—an example of "friendly fire". Waters quipped, "That’s what happens when you put two Alphas on the court". They will face No. 4 Catherine Parenteau and Jade Kawamoto next.
Finally, men’s doubles witnessed No. 7 Eric Oncins and Matt Wright prevail over No. 4 Dylan Frazier and JW Johnson in a three-game battle (11-8, 9-11, 11-8). Wright highlighted the match's "huge momentum swings" and emphasized coming out with aggressive energy in the third game to secure a 6-0 lead and hold on for the win. Oncins and Wright will compete against No. 2 Christian Alshon and Andrei Daescu, while No. 1 Ben Johns and Gabe Tardio advance to face No. 3 Federico Staksrud and Hayden Patriquin.
MLP Australia Day One Delivers Dream Breaker Chaos: Favorites Fall in Geelong
Geelong, Australia – The Major League Pickleball (MLP) Australia Victoria Event #5, hosted at the spectacular Dinks Pickle Ball Center, kicked off Day One with a series of upsets, culminating in dramatic tie-breaking Dream Breaker scorelines.
The top-seeded Northern Crocs, captained by Andie Dikosavljevic, survived a massive scare from the No. 6 Melbourne Mavericks. The Mavericks took a commanding 2-0 lead after standout performances in doubles. Captain Aaron Blitz and former world No. 1 Joey Farias secured the men’s doubles win. In the women's doubles upset, Nicola Schoeman and super sub Crystal Mildwaters dominated the highly regarded Crocs duo of Dikosavljevic and Jamie Haas. However, the married couple, Jamie Haas and Prycen Haas, secured a crucial mixed doubles victory, forcing the tie-breaker. The Crocs ultimately prevailed 3-2 in the singles Dream Breaker.
MLP parity was the theme of the day, as two other matchups also ended 3-2:
- The New Zealand Hustle defeated the Western Vipers. The Hustle relied heavily on the singles prowess of Santhosh Narayanan to win the decisive tie-breaker.
- The No. 2 Sydney Smash, featuring Captain Mitchell Hargreaves and Bernadette Massih, edged out the Asia Aces (No. 7) 3-2 after trading doubles rubbers.
In the remaining pool play, the No. 3 Bondi Pickleball Club, featuring Captain Roos van Reek, Louis Laville, and Max Manthou, defeated the Gold Coast Glory 3-1. Bondi secured the win despite the Glory pushing the mixed doubles rubber to its limit, relying on the experience of Glory Captain Sarah Burr and Ryan Henry. The Eastern Rush also defeated the Sydney Smash 3-1. Finally, the Southeast Asia Surge, led by Captain Sarah Jane Lim and Leander Lazaro, defeated the Melbourne Mavericks in the final Dream Breaker of the day.
The fierce competition established that the battle for the championship bracket seeds will be tight throughout the weekend.
