Scott Mayo, a Newport native and accomplished pickleball player, has been appointed captain of Team Wales for the upcoming European Championships. Fresh off a successful Welsh Open campaign where he secured mixed doubles gold and two silver medals, Mayo is focused on elevating Welsh pickleball on the international stage. His leadership style, which blends strategic thinking with playful encouragement, aims to foster team spirit and empower his players, whom he affectionately calls his "gladiators," to embrace the momentous occasion of representing their country.

Scott Mayo’s journey to captaining Team Wales at the European Championships in September 2025 is marked by both recent triumphs and a deep-seated passion for pickleball. At the recent Welsh Open, he demonstrated his prowess by finishing as runner-up in men's singles and men's doubles with Rob Adams, and clinching a gold medal in mixed doubles with Maisie Wise. He also contributed to a team event victory alongside his doubles partners and Georgie Girt, setting a strong precedent for his captaincy.
Mayo, who comes from a sporty family, stumbled upon pickleball through a gym membership, initially mistaking it for a typo. Despite lacking a formal racquet sport background, he was captivated within minutes, booking three more sessions that same week. He found that pickleball evoked a childhood nostalgia, reminding him of "playing bat and ball in the sea, or in the garden" and giving him a "new lease of excitement" that he had lost in other sports like golf. He views the sport as "pure fun" despite its technical intricacies.
As captain, Mayo’s vision extends beyond individual wins. He aspires to raise the standard of the game throughout Wales, hoping to discover and nurture talents who can represent the nation at the highest level. He notes that the team has "improved drastically" compared to the previous year and is now more accustomed to the pressures of competitive play, having gained significant tournament experience. Mayo describes himself as a "thinking person" who balances strategic insight with a "playful side," ensuring a positive atmosphere on and off the court.
To symbolise the significance of the upcoming championships and inspire his team, Mayo presented each member with a unique memento: a Lego figurine fashioned as a gladiator, complete with the Pickleball Wales logo. This gesture underscores his belief in his team as "gladiators" ready for battle, encouraging them to savour the moment, compete fiercely, and create lasting memories of representing their country. He wants them to "feel the occasion," "be in the moment," and "embrace and play every point". While he cannot control their performance, he aims to control the "feelings and the speech and with the things" he gives them as a reminder to be present, enjoy, and compete.
