What's the Score?
The Global Pickleball Federation (GPF), representing 63 member countries, has launched a Coaching Endorsement Program with the aim of significantly improving pickleball coaching standards globally. Led by representatives from Canada, Australia, Ireland, Egypt, and the United States, the program will establish high criteria for coach training organizations to ensure quality, affordable, and sustainable coaching is available both online and in person for players of all levels. The GPF has already endorsed four major organizations that meet these standards: International Foundation of Players Academy (IFPA), Pickleball Coaching International (PCI), Professional Pickleball Registry (PPR), and Racket Professional Organization (RPO).

The GPF's Coaching Endorsement Program addresses the critical need for widespread, high-quality pickleball coaching as the sport experiences rapid global growth. Chair Tony Casey from Canada emphasized that players of all ages and abilities will benefit from access to quality instruction that aligns with the GPF's best practices and standards. The program's focus is particularly on helping new and grassroots coaches deliver effective instruction, which is crucial for the continued expansion and development of pickleball worldwide.
To receive GPF endorsement, coach training organizations had to meet several strict requirements:
- Offer worldwide coach certification programs.
- Provide quality, affordable, and sustainable coaching.
- Focus on beginner and grassroots levels.
- Deliver education both online and face-to-face.
- Be professionally run with ongoing training.
- Teach skills, safety, and inclusive coaching methods.
The four endorsed organizations represent a diverse range of approaches to coach training:
- International Foundation of Players Academy (IFPA), led by Robert Elliott, is a nonprofit offering global certification, various training levels, personalized plans, skill ratings, and data-driven feedback.
- Pickleball Coaching International (PCI), led by Mark Renneson, is known for its online training and downloadable lessons, emphasizing practical skills and modern methods. PCI is also endorsed by USA Pickleball.
- Professional Pickleball Registry (PPR), led by Sarah Ansboury, provides worldwide training and certification, linked with the Professional Tennis Registry, and offers workshops, online courses, and community networking.
- Racket Professional Organization (RPO), led by Dan Santorum and supported by JOOLA, trains coaches using lessons created by top player Collin Johns, aiming to grow racket sports and build leadership.
Endorsed coaches will receive several benefits, including a listing in the GPF global coach network, the use of the GPF logo on their certificates and social media, and recognition as global-level instructors. GPF President Javier Regalado stated that this program will "champion the development of more coaches, in more places across the globe," ultimately supporting the growth and enjoyment of pickleball worldwide.
The GPF's initiative aims to establish a trusted network of qualified coaches, ensuring a consistent and high standard of instruction across different countries. This is expected to contribute significantly to the development of players at all levels and further popularize the sport globally.
