What’s the Score?

Armaan Bhatia has successfully defended his status as the undisputed king of Indian pickleball, retaining the number one spot in the latest Universal Pickleball Rating (DUPR) standings with a commanding rating of 5.900. Despite suffering an early-season upset loss to Harrison Brown at the PPA Masters in January 2026, Bhatia’s statistical dominance remains unchallenged, built upon a historic 2025 season that saw him become the first Indian to win a title on the APP Tour.

Hit it deeper!

To understand why Bhatia remains untouchable despite a slow start to the new year, one must look at the “meteoric” rise he engineered throughout the previous season. His campaign in 2025 was a sequence of broken barriers for Indian pickleball. It began with a silver medal at the Vlasic Classic in Cincinnati, where he became the first Indian to reach an APP Tour final. He quickly upgraded that silver to gold in May at the New York City Open, defeating seasoned pro Alex Crum in a gripping three-game thriller (15-10, 27-25) to claim the singles crown.

Bhatia’s influence extended beyond singular tournaments. In August 2025, he shattered another glass ceiling by signing professional contracts with both the PPA Tour and Major League Pickleball (MLP), effectively announcing India’s arrival on the sport’s biggest commercial stage. Domestically, he proved he was in a league of his own by securing a “triple crown”—gold in singles, men’s doubles, and mixed doubles—at the PWR DUPR India Masters in New Delhi.

The current rankings reflect a significant chasm between Bhatia and his domestic peers. While Bhatia sits at 5.900, the second-ranked Santosh Narayanan trails at 5.497, followed closely by Aditya Ruhela. However, the rankings also highlight a changing of the guard in the lower half of the top ten. The most notable mover is 15-year-old prodigy Arjun Singh, who has crashed into the top six with a rating of 5.397, signalling that the next generation of Indian talent is already nipping at the heels of the established order.

The World Pickleball Verdict

Armaan Bhatia is currently the “Virat Kohli” of Indian pickleball—a singular force whose individual excellence is dragging the entire nation’s ecosystem into the global spotlight. While his retention of the top spot is deserved, the emergence of teenagers like Arjun Singh and the presence of a professional chasing pack suggests that Bhatia cannot rest on his laurels. His PPA Masters upset is a warning sign: the global field is improving rapidly. For Indian pickleball to thrive, it needs Bhatia to succeed internationally, but it also needs the domestic field to close the gap on his 5.900 rating.
