What’s the Score?
The pipeline of future pickleball talent is flowing stronger than ever, as evidenced by the intense competition at the APP Selkirk Collegiate Florida Qualifier. In a battle for state bragging rights and a ticket to the national stage, the Florida Atlantic University (FAU) Pickleball Club emerged as the champions. The event highlighted the exploding popularity of the sport at the university level, with the APP organisers noting simply but effectively: “The kids can play”.
Hit it deeper!
Held in Boca Raton, the qualifier served as a direct pathway to the upcoming APP Collegiate Championships, raising the stakes for every match. FAU’s victory was hard-fought against a field of formidable rivals. The Florida State University (FSU) Pickleball Club’s “Gold” team secured the silver medal, proving the depth of their program. The University of Florida (UF) Club Pickleball took the Orange medal for third place, while the University of Central Florida (UCF) rounded out the top four.
The structure of these qualifiers ensures that the best collegiate teams are funnelled toward the national championship, creating a meritocratic system that mirrors the professional tour. The Florida event is just one stop on a larger roadmap; the focus now shifts westward to Texas, where the next qualifier is scheduled for January 24th and 25th. This rolling schedule allows the APP to scout and showcase the next generation of talent across different regions of the United States.
The World Pickleball Verdict
The success of the APP Collegiate series confirms that pickleball has successfully shed its reputation as a retirement community pastime. By formalising university competition, the sport is building a sustainable ecosystem where players can develop their skills in a high-pressure team environment before turning pro. FAU’s victory puts a target on their back as they head toward the Championship, signalling to the rest of the country that Florida remains a hotbed for elite pickleball talent.
